SUMMARY:Rally of Writers: Character Desire
DESCRIPTION:Romance novels have given a whole different connotation to the word “desire\,” but desire in literature doesn’t have anything to do with intimate relationships or lust. Instead\, think of desire as the motivation\, goals\, wants\, etc. Without it\, there is no character growth\, no forward movement of plot\, no obstacles to be overcome. Struggling with your story line? Can’t figure out how to create tension and stakes? Not getting enough from the Proust questionnaire? It probably all comes back to unclear desire lines for your characters. In this session\, we’ll learn about the “ladder of desire\,” why it’s crucial to every story\, how to incorporate it into your manuscripts\, and why it’s essential that your antagonists and secondary characters have fully fleshed-out desire lines as well.

SUMMARY:Rally of Writers: From Brainstorm to Outline
DESCRIPTION:Terry Pratchett once said\, “The first draft is just you telling yourself the story.” But wouldn’t it be great if you knew how to tell yourself the story and save a lot of time and hassle in the process? Maybe you’re a pantser\, or a plotter\, or somewhere in the middle. But wherever you are\, you can hone in on your story before you ever set pen to paper (or fingers to keyboards) with key elements that cut back on wasted time\, effort\, and energy. While I don’t guarantee that these suggestions will allow you to write the perfect draft\, one that won’t need revision\, I guarantee that you will look at your writing process more critically and find ways to set yourself up for success rather than set the stage for frustration.
