SUMMARY:Rally of Writers: Character Desire
DESCRIPTION:Romance novels have given a whole different connotation to the word “desire\,” but desire in literature doesn’t have anything to do with intimate relationships or lust. Instead\, think of desire as the motivation\, goals\, wants\, etc. Without it\, there is no character growth\, no forward movement of plot\, no obstacles to be overcome. Struggling with your story line? Can’t figure out how to create tension and stakes? Not getting enough from the Proust questionnaire? It probably all comes back to unclear desire lines for your characters. In this session\, we’ll learn about the “ladder of desire\,” why it’s crucial to every story\, how to incorporate it into your manuscripts\, and why it’s essential that your antagonists and secondary characters have fully fleshed-out desire lines as well.

SUMMARY:Rally of Writers: From Brainstorm to Outline
DESCRIPTION:Terry Pratchett once said\, “The first draft is just you telling yourself the story.” But wouldn’t it be great if you knew how to tell yourself the story and save a lot of time and hassle in the process? Maybe you’re a pantser\, or a plotter\, or somewhere in the middle. But wherever you are\, you can hone in on your story before you ever set pen to paper (or fingers to keyboards) with key elements that cut back on wasted time\, effort\, and energy. While I don’t guarantee that these suggestions will allow you to write the perfect draft\, one that won’t need revision\, I guarantee that you will look at your writing process more critically and find ways to set yourself up for success rather than set the stage for frustration.

SUMMARY:Show\, Don't Tell: Using Deep POV to Hook Your Reader
DESCRIPTION:We’ve all heard the “show\, don’t tell” admonition. But what exactly does it mean? And if you’ve already said your protagonist was afraid because she heard a scary noise under the bed\, why isn’t that enough? In this presentation\, we’ll learn the difference between showing and telling\, see how to get deep into your characters’ emotions\, and practice by revising some telling passages from both novels and picture books. I’ll also provide additional resources to help you figure out how to nail deep POV in your own work.

SUMMARY:Character Desire: What Your Character Wants\, Needs\, and Doesn't Even Know She's Missing
DESCRIPTION:Romance novels have given a whole different connotation to the word “desire\,” but desire in literature doesn’t have anything to do with intimate relationships or lust. Without it\, there is no character growth\, no forward movement of plot\, no obstacles to be overcome. In this workshop\, we’ll do hands-on exercises to learn what the three prongs of desire are; how desire impacts tension\, character agency\, and the climax of the story; and how to incorporate all these elements into your manuscripts and illustrations. Yes\, even a picture book must have desire! SUMMARY:Tone\, Voice\, and Mood: Not Just for Angsty Teens
DESCRIPTION:So often\, agents\, editors\, and well-meaning critique partners or beta readers provide vague feedback along the lines of “the voice on this piece doesn’t feel genuine\,” or “this doesn’t strike the right tone\,” without any specifics to back up their statements\, as if knowledge of tone\, mood\, and voice is built into a writer’s DNA. In this craft-based session\, the panelists define these ambiguous concepts using concrete examples\, allowing writers to revise their work in a deeper way.

SUMMARY:World Building: Your Contemporary Realistic Story Needs It\, Too
DESCRIPTION:Worlds with dragons\, fairies\, or tesseracts all need careful world building in order to create a realistic experience that pulls the reader in for the long haul. But the same elements that make for successful story in speculative fiction also apply to contemporary realistic fiction as well. We’ll discuss the psychology and emotion of world building\, and how to make it work for your novel and even your picture book.

SUMMARY:SCBWI Europolitan Conference 2019
DESCRIPTION:“Making Light: Humor’s Serious Place in Children’s/Young Adult Literature” with Jay Whistler \nJay dispels two myths: that humor is insignificant because it is lighthearted\, and that you’ve either got it or you don’t. She’ll discuss the craft of humor and demonstrate how to purposefully write funnier. She’ll talk about how humor lies at the intersection of truth and pain\, and how it gives effective means to speak to pain and injustice\, offering healing\, hope\, and light. And we’ll spend time tickling our own humerus with hands-on exercises designed to help you find your funny.
