Terry Pratchett once said, “The first draft is just you telling yourself the story.” But wouldn’t it be great if you knew how to tell yourself the story and save a lot of time and hassle in the process? Maybe you’re a pantser, or a plotter, or somewhere in the middle. But wherever you are, you can hone in on your story before you ever set pen to paper (or fingers to keyboards) with key elements that cut back on wasted time, effort, and energy. While I don’t guarantee that these suggestions will allow you to write the perfect draft, one that won’t need revision, I guarantee that you will look at your writing process more critically and find ways to set yourself up for success rather than set the stage for frustration.
