Grammar Rant: Stop Making Up Words!
Irregardless of What You Think, The Reoccurrence of Made Up Words Is Not Okay
What’s wrong with the above sentence? If you said, “Absolutely nothing, that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it,” then you and I have a problem.
If you said, “Irregardless is not a word, you dolt!” you’re right. If you said, “Since when is reoccurrence proper English?” you would also be correct.
The correct words are “regardless” and “recurrence.” That’s it. There’s no more to say.
Just for fun, comment below and let me know your favorite non-words that you see in others’ writing that drives you nuts.
I remember I had a college professor who said ” irregardless” during a class lecture ( Michigan state university, political science) .
I thought this was “obscene”

I am working on not using “irregardless”. I know it’s not a word (my friend Merriam-Webster told me). The word that gives me the creeps is ” alum”. You are an alumnus or alumnae. Or if you and friends are at a MSU tailgate with top shelf liquor, you are alumni!
